Pioneering a New Paradigm
Baby boomers are not only a force to be reckoned with, but also the first generation to consider changing the way we view “retirement”. With just over 6 million of our population age 65 or older and another even larger percentage between the ages of 50 and 64, this massive demographic shift brings with it unprecedented challenges and unprecedented opportunity.
We at The Experience Group are calling for drastic changes in the current employment practices and proving that retirement and working are not mutually exclusive. We are the architects of change in this area – change that will render any thoughts of retirement as we know it today obsolete.
Today, corporate retirement programs talk a lot about the positive aspects of retirement, implying that life will be better, simpler, free and easy. Work hours will be replaced with rounds of golf, walks on the beach, time with grandkids, leaning how to cook or embracing a second language. Maybe even the time for you to write your memoirs. The entire process is archaic.
But there’s nothing easy about retirement! It just doesn’t unfold or come with some magic motivation and the retirement pamphlet you got from HR does not tell you that. There is a dark side to retirement that has nothing to do with money and everything about rediscovering discovery. We are all for re-orienting work rather than eliminating work. Nudging you in a new direction.
Lots of companies talk about improving diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). I recently saw another acronym – IDEA (inclusion, diversity equity and accessibility). But what about age? Longevity may be the most important trend for our economy to pay attention to. For what might be the first time in history, we can find five generations represented in the workplace at one time and a lack of awareness and understanding of age issues drives discrimination deeper. And I’m not talked about just being nice to “old folks”. Companies had better figure this out as the future will skew even further in the direction of older workers.
Right now, it’s more important than ever to address the issues and opportunities that surround the corporate culture of retirement planning. We can help and our work can impact your company’s culture and bottom line in remarkable ways.
