It’s’ Time to Retire Retirement

Within a single generation the concept of retirement has been changed forever.  For some of you, your parents may have held a handful of jobs in their careers.  They might have even employed by a single company for decades before retirement became inevitable.

In those cases, there would have been some kind of party celebrating their efforts, a few gifts and handshakes exchanged before they left the building for the last time and woke up on Monday morning ready to ………

Today, things aren’t that simple.  Having a single job for life is virtually obsolete and completely giving up work is fast becoming outdated.  All you have to do is look up the word “retirement” in the dictionary to see how it no longer makes sense today.

We are not our grandparents.  These days people over the age of 60 will dramatically change this trajectory, wanting to stay stimulated, socially engaged, relevant, connected and generating much needed income.

Based on our research, about one in four retirees return to work or “unretire” within five years of retirement.  Turns out, it just isn’t what they expected or imagined it would be. Not everyone is ready to quit working at age 65 – many need or want more out of life.

The “gold watch” retirement is gone.  Join us as we forge a new model of retirement that is a radical departure from prior generations.  Help us overturn the deeply engrained assumptions about retiring at the age of 65 as we call for serious changes in the current employment practices and institutional policies and structures.  Retirement and working are not mutually exclusive.

If you are leading an organization, consider becoming an “Age Smart Employer” and unleash the incredible potential that a multi-generational team can provide.  If you are an individual, become Silver Seal Certified and become an architect for a bold new future
