Everyone. Is. In. Sales
It doesn’t matter what you call it – account management, client success management, strategic solutions advising, marketing, negotiating, presenting, customer service…….everyone is in sales.
Have you ever convinced a toddler to eat broccoli? The only way I could sell this idea to one of my kids was to cover it with cheese.
Ever negotiated a curfew with a teenager?
Talked your boss into giving you an opportunity to explore a new idea?
Congratulations—you’re already in sales. It’s just that not everyone is comfortable with that idea. After all, you didn’t go to university or study your specialty for years to be called a “salesperson” did you?
Today’s “titles” on business cards support this idea. Rarely do I see the word “sales” on a business card – fancier titles are given. I wonder who these are for? I knew someone who used to sell stuff in the oil and gas industry. When asked “what do you do?”, he didn’t say he was in sales, but rather that he worked in the oil and gas industry. I know many who sell radio ads – they are all “media specialists”.
We are all selling day in and day out. Ideas to our team members, colleagues and bosses. Other possibilities to our customers to consider. Why should your customers choose your company as a partner. Why should they continue to work with you. Why what a customer is doing today might not be the best for them and some kind of change might be needed. Sales.
Are you a teacher? You’re selling new ideas, curiosity, concepts, processes and inspiration.
Are you a sports coach? You’re selling game plans, grit and a willingness to practice.
Are you a politician? Well, they sell everything don’t’ they?
Are you in customer service? You’re selling the why behind the whats.
Are you part of a team? You’re selling accountability, curiosity, rowing in the same direction.
Are you a receptionist or delivery person? You’re selling that you and your company care.
Sales is the fine and strategic art of influence. Of helping someone see a possibility they hadn’t considered, or a reason to take a step forward with you.
Want to master business? Learn to sell.
Want to grow your bottom line? Learn to sell (before you start slashing costs).
Want to lead and inspire? Learn to sell your vision.
Because whether you love it or hate it, Everyone. Is. In. Sales.
if you or your team want to level up those skills without feeling “salesy,” that’s where I come in and if you are here you know how to reach me.
